Do you want your own herb planter in side garden?

23 May

Members of the board are interested in beautifying the building landscape, and creating a community garden space for culinary herb planters.

If you are interested in having your own herb planter in the side gated garden area, you will need to purchase a terra cotta pottery planter (NO PLASTIC PLANTERS, or other colors).

Example of Terra Cotta Planter--deeper for larger herbs, and shallow for smaller herb samplings

We want the space to be uniform and neat.  No planting directly into the ground, all herbs must be planted into whatever size terra cotta ceramic planter you prefer.  All herb planters need a gardening marker stake indicating your garden’s name.

Gardening stakes to label your garden's name

You may grow herbs only, as they are easily controlled in proper size planting pots. No vegetables or fruit, please.

Some herbs that you might consider: Deciding which herbs to grow is dependent upon four factors: (1) ease of growing the herb (2) potential yield per area that is obtained (3) amount of herb consumed during the year, and (4)cost of the herb if purchased rather than home grown, If your family consumes only a small amount of coriander during the year, it would probably not be economical to grow coriander in the garden.

The following is a list of herbs that are recommended for beginner herb gardeners. On average, these herbs are easy to grow, yield well per area, offer great variety in culinary characteristics, and can easily be stored.

Mint

Sweet Marjoram

Dill

Lavender

Cilantro

Parsley

Oregano

Sage

Chervil

Tarragon

Lemongrass

Basil

Chives

Rosemary

Thyme

You may grow with seeds or starter plants. You are responsible for maintaining your planters, and before the frost emptying them and storing them. Some herb plants will come back next season, if the pots are covered with plastic wrap. Make sure you seek advice from plant nursery experts when purchasing your herb plants for best results.

Please see the herb garden sign up sheet hanging on the board next to the mailbox area to the right. Please read the rules of our community herb garden, and follow the directions carefully if you want to participate. The sign up sheet asks for your apt.#, name of your garden (name it what you wish), and quantity of containers.

Thank you!
